Tragic end to dolphin rescue bid

Daily Record

1st september 2003

ISLANDERS battled in vain to save four beached dolphins.

Residents of Weisdale Voe in Shetland had seen a pod of five dolphins swimming near the shore for a fortnight.

But on Saturday morning, locals woke to see four of the eight-foot-long, white- sided dolphins beached.

Rescuers found two were still alive and managed to get them back into the water.

For 10 hours, they stood up to their chests in water holding the dolphins upright.

One of the dolphins tried to swim out to sea a few times but gave up after a hundred feet or so and drifted back ..

Eventually, both creatures had to be put down.

The fifth dolphin remained swimming nearby throughout the day but had vanished back out to sea yesterday.
