Teachers get a lesson in marine pollution

Teachers at an Edinburgh high school are helping to tackle the problem of marine pollution.

Staff from Portobello High joined teachers from other parts of Scotland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark in Gothenburg recently to discuss the issues surrounding litter in the North Sea.

The teachers, all members of the Eco Schools programme, took part in an international conference hosted by the Save the North Sea project to look at how best to highlight marine litter to children.

Portobello teacher Allan Scott said: "Because Portobello is a city school, the 1453 pupils don’t have as much of a relationship with the sea and coast, as the city centre provides such competition. Listening to experiences of the Norwegian delegates, who have similar locations but not the same city centre competition, highlighted how they had better relationships with the sea.

"This has given us something to think about and focus on how they can get closer ties with the sea and rectify the situation with school- children so the North Sea becomes a larger part of their lives."

Jamie Pearson, Eco Schools information officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: "With around 20,000 tonnes of litter dumped in the North Sea every year, it is vitally important to get young people involved."
