QUEENSLAND boaties have been warned to stay clear of humpback whales migrating northwards along the coast.

Queensland Environment Minister John Mickel said the whales had already been seen off North Stradbroke Island, Cape Moreton and the Gold Coast.

Mr Mickel said as whale populations continued to recover, about 5000 of the mammals were expected to move along the coast between now and late November on their annual migration to breeding grounds.
